It's just all seas dried up and replaced with eternal dust storms. It's not that deep. The point was never what happened but how people would deal with it.

The Gibson movies aren’t even consistent with that, and I think that’s fine. It’s a trait of the series at this point.

Was there any real inconsistency in the Gibson era? Seemed pretty straightforward to me.

Movie 1 is obviously movie 1. In the Road Warrior, his clothes are a little torn and he loses his car. The apocalypse is at fever pitch.

In Beyond Thunderdome, Max is visibly aged. His makeup includes injuries from both Mad Max and The Road Warrior.

There's also a theme of society re-establishing itself with Bartertown, and Sydney at the end.

It's a pretty coherent narrative arc until Fury Road buttfucks things with Max randomly having his old car back and everyone else acting like it's been centuries since the apocalypse (how the fuck did Immortan Joe get all these worshippers and that giant safe carved into the mountain?)

I know you're not supposed to be anal with continuity in these films, but I don't see the point of flagrantly ignoring it either. It's like if James Bond movies resurrected his wife every now and then. The point of having a flexible continuity is to move on.

Ideally, I'd like a Mad Max film that dealt with law and order coming back, but it's a totalitarian government. Max is old as shit and just wants everyone to fuck off and leave him alone, but he ultimately can't ignore how the people are getting trampled so he takes charge of them and becomes the post-apocalyptic Robin Hood, going up against some evil version of his 1979 police self.

Max wouldn't defeat the government or anything, but he'd die doing some badass driving stunt that kills the cop, gives his people a victory and inspires them to keep going.
