Gameplay is just an obstacle to Kojima, an annoying box he has to check in order to create a game. If he truly had his way there would be nothing but cutscenes. His ego prevents him from actually making movies because he knows he would be a nobody in Hollywood but he still gets treated like royalty in the games industry.
He can't. Not only doesn't that business model not work anymore, his current status requires him to have "gameplay" and worse yet it has to be "innovative".
Now, it doesn't actually have to be good or actually new. It just has to pretend to be a video game enough to convince journo scum and his ultra loyal dickriders to consider it a game. That's not asking much but still so much more than he'd like to do.
He'd be full Hollywood if he could. But then he's not quite as challenged as Chris Roberts and figures that it's better to be the Scorsese of vidya than being the Uwe Boll of anything not involving punching Lowtax.
And far beyond. It's one thing to just shitpost. It's another to fuck off from your director's commentary for the DVD of your movie for a solid ten minutes because you took a call and figured you'd tale a piss as well.
