I don't think we need to discuss the merit of that strategy, seeing how they all eat shit in praxis.

Nine years after introducing pay-what-you-can restaurants to several U.S. cities, Panera Bread is admitting defeat and closing down its last remaining non-profit Panera Cares location. The Massachusetts restaurant will shutter on February 15, according to Eater Boston.

The chain opened its first donation-based community cafe in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2010. Under the model championed by the company’s founder Ron Shaich, the restaurant operated like a typical Panera, but offered meals at a suggested donation price, with the goal of raising awareness about food insecurity. “In many ways, this whole experiment is ultimately a test of humanity,” Shaich said in a TEDx talk later that year. “Would people pay for it? Would people come in and value it?” It appears the answer is a resounding no.

At its peak, Panera Cares operated five locations, including ones in Dearborn, Michigan; Portland, Oregon; Boston, and Chicago. Each restaurant was designed to sustain itself, but the restaurants weren’t financially viable. The Portland-based Panera Cares was reportedly only recouping between 60 and 70 percent of its total costs. The losses were attributed students who “mobbed” the restaurant and ate without paying, as well as homeless patrons who visited the restaurant for every meal of the week. The location eventually limited the homeless to “a few meals a week.”

You opened these restaurants in fucking cities where people are dicks too. This might have worked in rural areas where people all know each other (and hence would be shamed in the community for being dicks) but this business was probably run by a 5 year or a socialist.

Lol. Talk about a fucking optimistic business model.

It's not even just that people are dicks in those cities, which they are. They're given zero incentive not to be dicks. It's the same reason the "recommended donation" digital game packages don't let you get everything for a penny anymore. You're gonna give away food for free? Okay, the homeless are gonna fucking love you. They're gonna eat 3 meals a day at your restaurant and do their drug deals right outside your front door while pissing on your sidewalk. And they'll STILL hate you for it. Y'all probably don't realize how much pure animal hate and selfishness can be inside a person.

LOL at the notion of performing a "test of humanity" in a place like Boston, Chicago or Portland.

And of course the students are gonna mob the restaurant and eat without paying! Probably half of those students are from out of state! That's not their neighborhood and you're not their fucking friend. You're a fucking tool and patsy and they're laughing at how stupid you are.

Only a sheltered rich kid who has never lived in poverty could look at the Panera business model and think it would work. When people are in need and they hurt, that's when they become the biggest assholes ever.

For the most part, I'm the most upstanding moralfag in the world, but even I have taken advantage of stupidly optimistic setups, like public transit with no ticket checkers. This isn't even a case of people being ripped off so much as being world-record levels of retarded.

I don't understand this. You open that restaurant, see it's not working out and then you open four more? Did they think one of them would get Fine Dining tier pay to drag the ones operating at a monstrous loss out of the mud? 60-70% loss is no laughing matter. That's not some "let's see if it'll eventually work out" kinda loss, that's a "we're fucked in two months tops" loss.

Probably hoped to find some DSP-tier paypig that gives them hundreds of bucks per meal

Maybe he thought he was breaking new grounds, since basically nobody in the history of forever used this IRL business practice. I almost wonder why...

Why not just open a soup kitchen? I mean, that's basically what that is anyway. A fucking soup kitchen

Pretty fucking expensive experiment. Hopefully if another business tries to open up a pay-what-you-want division, they'll do it in a rural place. Also, why the fuck did they name it Panera Cares? That shit sounds fucking stupid.

I remember reading about the one in Portland. Homeless shelters were telling people to go there to get free food.
