Ackchually, that's to do with Quake being weird when it was released. The soundtrack for Quake was played direct from the tracks on the game CD, which were never actually installed on your PC when you played the game. So that means unless you have the original CD-ROM with the soundtrack files on, you can't get the soundtrack. Unless of course you use a mod/dick around pasting music files into a directory, apparently that was too much effort for anyone to do in the re-release.

I think that wasn't too uncommon back in the day. Hard drive space wasn't as humongous as it is now, so games would play music and videos directly off of the disc. Games like Diablo 2 even had an installer that let you select how much of that stuff should be installed onto the drive and what should stay on the disc.

I suppose with Quake, they shelled out to get Trent Reznor to score it, so they wanted the soundtrack to be CD quality. I know Quake was the only game I remember doing that, but then again few other games needed that quality of sound at the time.
