Nintendo's addiction to gimmicks is eternal, it seems. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. How many people use the 3D function of the 3ds? Probably nobody. Wii U was shit. Wii sold well but most of the games were shit. Switch's gimmick is at least decent, since handhelds are an underserved market.

It's still the same console. Effectively, there's only ever one current version of a handheld on the market.

Yeah, Nintendo are the ONLY company releasing handhelds and it's been that way since the end of the PSP era. Vita doesn't count because nobody bought it and sony ended support for the console only a couple years into its life.

So if you want A handheld, ANY handheld, you have to get a nintendo handheld. Unless you're cool with playing old shit, which I am but normalfags and gamer plebs are not.

Even if you're fine with old handhelds it's only the PSP that's not a Nintendo handheld. That's it. The Vita obviously should be excluded because nobody is going to go back to that absolute failure and if I rule it out I'll have to be fair and rule out the Neo Geo Pocket as well, as much as that pains me.

Nintendo has had the handheld market for themselves from the moment they made video games with the Game & Watch consoles. It's one of these weird phenomenons like with sports teams that have been dominant for several decades. Although times changed and nobody of the past winner teams is left they just keep being the best in their field.
I guess sometimes the ship of Theseus is the same even after all parts are replaced.

And the thing with nintendo and handhelds is, as much as they fuck up in some way on every single console they've made since the SNES era, their handhelds are usually pretty solid across all generations. Even game boy color had some (((HIDDEN JEMS))) on it.

So they're dominant, but deservedly so. Not only are they the only game in town, but even if their were competition, it would have a pretty high bar to hit. I personally prefer the psp library, but that's just me and the psp is fucking old as shit by this point. Hardly a fair comparison with the newest switch versions and the (((hd))) quality games.
