The japanese names of the badguys were always onomonopeias but the worldwide ones are mob slang, like "Koopa" etc, Bowser was just some guy he knew, Mario is named after his apartment owner when he stayed in America, a guy named Mario who lived with his wife, Pauline, Peach is known like that because gangsters called their girls "a peach", Daisy was named for similar reasons etc.
