I'm getting into Age of Wonders 3 right now. Seems very solid.

Civ 6 made me turn away from the franchise - I don't like some of the changes they've introduced, the AI is still retarded and agressive as hell, what's the point of trying to work with them, if they all turn against me any time I do something they don't approve of, and hold grudges for millenia? Fuck them all. I have hundreds of hours in Civ V, but probably like 50 in Civ 6. Playing the game felt like a struggle. And it looks like a cheap mobile game, which it basically is, they don't have a mobile port yet, but it's on tablets.

As for modern RTS games, there are very few worth mentioning. They are planning a remake of first Red Alert right now, don't know what to think of it. Some russians are making a promising RTS from steampunk WW1 settings, looks like Company of Heroes style. Other than that, the only good RTS in a long time that I can remember is the newest Homeworld. Good one, but rather expensive, not a AAA game worth the AAA money they asked on release.

But I've spend a lot of time in Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2. These games have what keeps me interested, I guess I just needed the fantasy settings for more unit varienty, since the historical ones just weren't too impressive - I was getting quite bored in Rome 2, couldn't even finish a game. Same with Shogun 2, it looks good, but felt dull. TW Warhammer has varienty, and the game modes are entertaining as well, fighting for time as you try to conquer as much stuff around you to fulfill the objective before your enemies is good.

How's Civ 3 by the way? I hear many claim that it's the best one, others like 4 better. I found 5 to be pretty good once development was actually finished but always lost interest at some point when things start to become a bit tedious.

3 has some oddities, like how pollution goes apeshit in the modern age. You'd think this was sponsored by Captain Planet or something.

Modding the game can also be a real pain in the ass, because at least the German translation has renamed the actual unit files. Dunno if this was some engine limitation or the translators being retarded, but you need a copy of every unit with the English name for English mods to work, and even then you will run into problems because the German special unit is the "Panzer", which is also the German word for the generic tank unit.

(Though I've only played the vanilla version of the game. Dunno if the expansion(s) fixed everything.)

I guess I'll download it in English then when I decide to give it a go.

I hate that, but it's not that bad. I got the first game from Humble Bumble Fumble for like 10 dollars, and bought some of the DLCs when heavily discounted. Fortunately, the game lasts a long time on it's own, without any DLCs anyways, so it's still a decent value.

no its not, until you spend 250-350 bucks on this game you own an incomplete "product" that feels more like a scam.

They never go on deep sales either (the dlc) so you cant have had decent value.
