Sonic has lore? I thought they were just simple games which happen to appeal to people with bizarre fetishes.

Turn in your Internet Autist card, you aren't wanted here.

Tbf, Sanic 06 was easily the peak in terms of sheer fucking hubris for the video games. Other games are less cringe unless they make heavy use of Shadow the EdgePOC and his stupid backstory.
But bear in mind that most of the Sanic autism for baka gaijin is centered around the old Archie comics, which are their own galaxy of autism.

Maybe my opinions are tinted too negatively, having grown up next to the "Adventures of Sonic" show, or as we called it more aptly: "Sonic der irre Igel"
(basically, "Sonic the insane hedgehog")

Adventures of Sanic is the most kino Sanic ever was and ever will be. There's a reason it dominates the market for animated Sanic memes.

Case in point, everything Ken Penders touches turns into severe autism.

I read those comics when they started out, and they weren't super terrible then. It was basically the Saturday morning show mixed with AoSTH, but of course Ken Penders came on as a writer and it morphed into the autistic shitstorm it eventually became.

Afaik the comic started off fairly episodic, with plots closer to the Adventures of Sanic than Sanic SatAM. But then shit got more serious and plot-driven, and it really went downhill after Robotnik died because then Penders and gang had to come up with several new bad guys to serve as potential replacements.
That is until Robotnik got resurrected. Or it turned out he never actually died to begin with. Or he got replaced by an alternate universe version that actually looks like he does in the video games. It's really hard to keep track of this shit.

Oh, and did I mention that the Archie Comics had two different kinds of humans? All because the human characters from SatAM had the cartoon-standard of 3 fingers plus a thumb, instead of 4 fingers plus a thumb.

Yeah, the Archie comics were a clusterfuck, and that's not even getting into the reboot when Penders got fired.
