The Road to G-Rank
What a rocky road this is. I've finished a key quest to hunt a Malfestio and a Misutsune. Now there's only a few key quests and two urgent hunts in my way.

The one I decided to tackle next was of a Brachydios. I think I'll fail this one. I've already carted twice.
That's all thanks to there always being a second monster that could show up. 70% for a Rathalos, 30% for a Deviljho. Guess what I got!

As if it wasn't enough that I'm basically fighting a G-Rank Brachy that can two shot me when angry, now I've got this dumbass hungry pickle showing up every fucking two minutes.
I feel like I'm not even making progress on the Brachy.

Never mind, I managed to succeed. 38 minutes ffs. At least half of that was poop throwing at and running from the cucumber.

Last key quest is a hunt for a Glavenus and a Uragaan. I expect that one to be much easier if they don't insist on sticking together too much.

After that, two urgent quests await. One for a Seregios that has a 50% chance of a Tigrex showing up, a 45% chance for a Deviljho and a wonderful 5% chance for a Wild Deviljho.

The other urgent quests is for a Diablos. No other monster involved. But we all know how Diablos can be.

Totally overlooked that there's actually an urgent quest to kill a Nakarkos. I was a bit surprised about it.
I failed the quest. After looking up some tips, I'll craft a decent dragon element weapon first and try again then.

It's way too bright outside and too dark in the arena anyway. Can't see shit, even with the blinds shut.

I farmed the angry pickle for a set of DBs. Boy, do I hate fighting him. Everything is cool, until you get bit, get the defence down debuff, he gets mad and combos you into a corner for a smooth two hit KO.

Anyway, time to put an item kit together and fuck up that stupid skellington squid!

Nakarkos state: Demolished!

The choice to make Deviljho DB for the dragon element paid off! 35 minutes, no carting and not too much of a struggle.

For a Siege monster it's actually a pretty cool fight. It's just difficult to gauge if you're making good progress or not.
Some tips for the squid:
  • Bring a weapon with dragon element. The best you can make.
  • Bring a healer Palico to reduce downtime.
  • Wear your best armor with aggressive abilities.
  • Wail on the arms for the first stage.
  • Take note that when he emerges for the second stage that you can hit him in the head but he emmits a constant blue miasma that damages like lava.
  • When he digs up monster parts, you can make him drop them with sonic bombs.
  • Bring a teleporter! Should be default kit anyway.
  • When hes charging his insta-death laser, stay super close to his face.
  • Now is your time to go absolutely mental in his face as the miasma is gone!
  • Hold tranq bombs ready!
  • If you don't manage to get him to fall before his laser is ready, throw a tranq in his mouth. It will chocke him up. The effect diminishes exponentially.
  • It's not worth going for a tranq if you have enough space to just dodge the laser. You can only stop him with tranqs three times anyway, as it takes 1, then 2, then 4.
  • If he goes into the waters at the edge for his laser and you can't get behind him, use the teleporter and get the free ballista ammo back at camp.
  • Only pick up ballista ammo from his shiny drops from flinches.
  • Always get those from body flinches, they are five shots. Arm flinch shinies give you two shots.
  • Ballista him in the face whenever convenient during his miasma stage.
  • When he falls over, walk onto it on it's left and give that weakpoint absolute Hell!
  • The blue goo makes it so you get the bone status when you roll. You have to wait it out. Cleaner works against the bone status, though.
I barely needed to heal. When you get him to his third time being super angry he's close to done. Fire all ballista ammo you have at him to close the deal.

I've unlocked the flying tavern. It's the hub for G-Rank. All that's left to do is to hunt a proper G-Rank Diablos to prove myself worthy.

Officially G-Rank!

Three years ago I took a break. This feels like checking off a task on my bucket list!
After this, I'm really looking forward to fighting easy G-Rank monsters, crafting some early armor, doing some chill gathering, decide on what proper monster to grind for a good set and clean up lots of HR requests.

Unlocking G-Rank also unlocked a ton of 7*HR quests for monsters I never encountered.
I also haven't finished the Village storyline. I'll do that once I have some proper G-Rank gear.

What a huge relief! I haven't been this much into MonHun, or really any game, for years! Feels fucking great to seriously get back into the groove!

As is good custom, the difficulty scaling between ranks is a sheer cliff.

The highest defence armor of HR is the Nakarkos set. It's got 70 defence at level one. A Deviljho or Rajang one sit at 66, so that's quite good.

Absolute dreck armor you'd unlock just by mining some bullshit with skills only good for gathering at G-Rank starts at 96.
The cat cook joke armor sits at 116. Even the fucking gunner version has almost 100 defence value.

We're not even at Jaggi levels! Lots of HR hyper hunts are going to get a lot easier!

Remember the Bulldrome? That large Bullfango that's more a joke than an actual monster to hunt?
Imagine that fucker damn near as large as a Rathalos being on your ass relentlessly while you're trying to fight a Giadrome. I actually got carted.

G-Rank doesn't fuck around. That pig was almost ten metres long! I'll do some other easy early hunts to see what the armor sets do and then decide on what to go for.

I can't remember if I made it to G-Rank in GU or if I stopped in High. I should get back to it someday. I'd probably stay with Hunting Horn, Hammer and Longsword as usual.
