Launchpad style crash landings don't work IRL.
But I do remember a news piece some years ago where they did a test to see if someone with no knowledge could land with instructions via radio. And the answer was yes.
With him taking off and successfully oing a barrel roll, he probably could've pulled off landing the plane if he wanted (and asked for) help.

I think that may be evidence that he DID want to die. He didn't want to be locked up forever. He didn't want to get "roughed up" by military dudes at the base. I think he said something like he "wasn't planning on landing".
