That is exactly why they have been dealing with nothing but the migrant crisis since 2015 and haven't gotten anywhere. I guess that's why it developes into a totalitarian system now. Would be the only way to keep it alive.

It'll fall apart even faster if they try to get totalitarian. European governments hate being told what to do by some EU yokel. Giving the EU more control would be a death sentence.

You can't really keep it alive, since the flaws are too ingrained into the EU's fundament. It expanded too fast, with too many countries having vastly differnet economic power, and it keeps running into problems that the founders didn't really expect back then. Everyone was just expecting that things would always go according to keikaku.
It either needs to go back being a pure trade union, or it needs actual ways to just kick out folks who don't follow the rules.

A french guy wrote a book 50 years ago about Europe. He declared the nation states outdated.

He envisaged a federation of nations, including Basques, Bretons and Alsatians, rather than a union of states.

Europe should just have reinstated the Metternich System. That worked moderately well from 1814 to 1872; much better than the EU, at least.
