I always thought it was spelled Looney Toons but it's actually Looney Tunes.

When they started out Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were based around songs that Warner Bros. owned the rights to. They were sort of the music videos of their day. Looney Tunes were black and white and the fancier Merrie Melodies were in color. (Disney had a series at the time called Silly Symphonies, too.) They just stuck with these titles even after they stopped revolving around music, and the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies titles were used interchangeably after all of the cartoons were in color.

Oh, and before all of these, WB had a series called Spooney Melodies, but these weren't cartoons. Only one of these survives today and can be found on YouTube.
