It wasn't the first time Marvel tried to do away with the marriage. They tired with the Clone Saga back in the 90s by replacing married Peter Parker with single Ben Reilly and when MJ got blown up in a plane in the early 2000s.

Cosmic and supernatural forces really shouldn't have a place in a Spidey comic, because you usually end up with dumb shit like this. Spidey comics are autistic enough as it is.

Funnily enough at one point editorial were considering bringing in Mephisto to put an end to the Clone Saga but they decided that he was kind of out of Spider-Man's league and the ending would have been too farfetched even for the Clone Saga at this point. Fast forward to ten years later...

It's one of those funny details like the time Joe Quesada said that if 616 Marvel and Ultimate Marvel crossed over that would be the day Marvel ran out of ideas. Then they actually did a crossover and Quesada tried to backpedal hard from that statement.

You're thinking of Secret Wars. Before that they did a crossover with 616 Spider-Man and Miles Morales, where Peter Parker basically just told Miles how stunning and brave he was the entire time. It's basically what you'd expect from Brian Bendis

With the clear exceptions of Mark Waid and Dan Slott, most of them actually have wives and children. The reasons they don't want Spider-Man to be married are:

A) Because they feel like marriage 'ages' the character. For him to be married he's got to be at least in his late twenties to early thirties, as opposed to the early-to-mid twenties and late teens that he was in previously. Of course, now he's basically divorced which to me ages him even more
B) Because they think that Spider-Man books should have some stupid as shit relationship drama rather than having his wife as something stable in his life. Of course most readers don't give a shit about relationship drama but try to tell Marvel that
C) Joe Quesada actually wanted Peter Parker to date (and presumably fuck) a girl named after and based on his daughter.
