That's another thing. Sci-Fi aliens are always immune against bullets for some bullshit reason and use lasers or something. The funny thing being that lasers are something that can actually get reflected and deflected and if there ever was a powerful laser fit to be a weapon it'd be easily countered by something.

Meanwhile, good old blunt kinetic energy NEVER gets outclassed. No matter what it is, hurl something with enough mass fast enough at it (with more speed being more efficient than more mass) and it will get destroyed.
There is pretty much no upper limit. You can shoot just about anything but a black hole to shit and I think even that would get into trouble if you threw something twice it's mass at almost the speed of light at it.
Get fucked with your energy shields. Even Newtonian physics demands you at least to get pushed back and the ability to vaporize something eventually becomes zero if you go fast enough. I bet current rail guns could blast through any space vessel.

I agree that any space-faring race would be well-versed in war. I also think that they would have left most of war behind themselves. If you don't fight a war for long enough your society becomes soft and that they would be. Good luck dealing with a planet full of bloodthirsty fuckheads of which a billion+ would make it their life's goal to murder you.
It's an aspect I really love about WH 40k. People would fight actual gods out of sheer defiance and would stand a good chance to hold the line.

I think a spacefaring race would have left tribal warfare behind on the level of their own species, but would absolutely be warlike and hostile to any new race. They would see it as a prime opportunity to get free slave labor, free precious metals and free food/energy sources. Space travel is obscenely expensive. An alien race would have to either have devised a method of travel so inexpensive that travel for its own sake could be considered worth it, or they would have to need certain rare supplies so badly that they were required to expend the astronomical cost to obtain them. OR... The alien society is so affluent and powerful that space travel is like a vacation to the Bahamas. Various science fiction novels have postulated beings like this, which exist inside of (and powered by) the energy of black holes, or are some form of biological AI using solar energy or matter accretion to create energy.

If the alien beings are even remotely at our own level of intelligence, then it follows they would be shortsighted, cruel and lazy. Those are evolutionary traits. Unless evolution does not apply whatsoever outside of our own planet (I don't see how this is possible,) then we would expect to see similar tribal behaviors. The arrangement of the human face is not likely to be replicated anywhere else in the universe (we have a flattened fish face or some shit,) but behaviors? Basic shit like "be in group = good, more survive, more breed, stronger against enemy. Be suspicious of new thing. New thing often bad, often kill." should be everywhere.

Lazors are futuristic. That's pretty much it. But they aren't even that good in space, because although they're the most accurate wepaon, the huge distances in space mean you lose a lot of energy on the way to the enemy.
Kinetic weapons on the other hand? They'll just keep going until they can fuck something up. You could probably take out the ISS with a coke bottle.

The hippie ideal of everyone being ultra peaceful and super intelligent makes no damn sense. The space race mainly happened because it was a dick waving contest between the USA and Russia, tinfoil hatters claim we never got to the moon but the reality is the only reason it happened then and isn't happening now is because it was insanely expensive. It was solely a moral boost for The West.

Fuck, a HUGE chunk of modern technology is actually made by the US military first and then brought into the market later, including the internet. But nah bruh, peaceful hippies in the forest could have built super rockets that can reach Mars in a second but our violent ways held us back.

I'd say most - if not all - technological advancements stem from some sort of conflict. Would a perfectly-working anarcho utopia somewhere in space even think about inventing rockets?

Few things spark our creativity quite like wanting to "beat" someone or something. Even the fucking writers of the Super Robot Wars games know that, which is why one of their favorite original plotline is "Aliens want to use humans for fun and profit because humans are notorious warmongers that will improve the fuck out of any murdertech you give them".

There's a quote from Peter Watts that encapsulates that idea. Along with "technology implies belligerence," he argues that technology exists to force the universe into unnatural shapes. So no, a society that is utopian would have no reason to develop technology beyond what they currently have. A society of straw huts ringed with a wooden palisade has no reason to build mud brick and stone fortresses. It's a lot of work for no benefit. Technology is an answer to a serious problem.

Problem: not enough food
Solution: figure out how to create food in large quantities
Technology: nets, domestication of crops, irrigation, hunting parties for large game, development of cellar storage, drying out existing food to make it last longer etc

If there is enough food, then fuck it! Digging irrigation channels is a lot of hard work! Domesticating animals requires you to breed them and not immediately kill them all for meat. Weaving nets takes a long time and is tedious, and why bother if the rivers are so full of fish you can catch enough easily for your family's needs in a day?
