I think Schindler's List is Spielberg's last really great film. Kubrick's criticism of it is valid but it's really gripping. I would say it's Spielberg's only Oscar bait type film that's exceptionally well-made and entertaining. A ton of people love Saving Private Ryan but I agree with Keith's criticism. The opening is excellent but most of the film is formulaic and some of the scenes are really contrived/corny.

To me Spielberg has made a lot of perfectly okay films for the past 25 years like Munich, War of the Worlds, that Tom Hanks russian spy film. I watch them once and then immediately forget about them. I'm interested in Indiana Jones 5 out of morbid curiosity because Harrison Ford will be close to 80 when it comes out.

Saving Private Ryan has one good scene, and that's the beach scene at the beginning. The rest of it is your bog standard war movie. It's not in the calibre of Apocalypse Now or anything like that.

I must admit to liking Schindler's List

There were some strong scenes in Private Ryan that hadn't been shown in that context before. You have to remember when it came out, at that time, it was probably more powerful. My neighbor who was in WW2 told me that it was the first time he felt that Hollywood came close to getting it right. Because of that I'll always give it more credit than maybe it deserves, but when it first came out, it was pretty intense.
