It is really annoying seeing everyone get super excited to see a blockbuster, only to find out you can't because there's a million movies before that that you'd have to see to understand the plot. And it's not even that, but the fact that you'll have to sit through movies about superheroes you would have zero interest in otherwise.

Come to think of it, Wizardry is basically the blueprint for a fantasy JRPG with random sci-fi bits thrown into it. Sure, earlier Ultimas had that, too, but those games were a lot more batshit with it.

Wizardry in turn owes a lot to the mentioned PLATO system games like The Dungeon and Oubliette from 1975 and 1977 respectively.
Claiming Ultima wasn't hugely influential for the era is just plain wrong. There were hundreds of straight up Ultima clones. I don't like Ultima, I don't like Garriot but downplaying the massive impact it had on computer RPGs is contrarian nonsense.

Wizardry influenced a lot of those early RPG games more than anything.

Wizardry was so big in Japan, it got its own OVA.

Some of you seem to know more than I do about this, but it's worth mentioning that even the quintessential JRPGs have their roots in western influences. Dragon Quest is just Ultima's top-down-view world navigation (hell, in the Famicom release of DQ1, the map sprites didn't have directional facings, much like the older Ultimas) + Wizardry's first-person-view combat, all wrapped up in the menu navigation from that detective game that Horii did before it. And the first Final Fantasy is absurdly close to just being a D&D campaign (direct parallels to orginal AD&D, I think). Some people speculate that the only reason the franchise even still exists is because someone on the localization team had the presence of mind to change the Beholder to a more generic-looking eye monster. There's a lot more info out there, and it's pretty interesting if you have the right strain of 'tism, so go nuts.
