Magic definitely does the same thing. Seems like all the big games do these days. Power creep is just good business.

That's also why magic does those things like "vintage" and rules do only certain sets are allowed in tournaments. They fucked up hard in the early sets and made some of the best cards at the beginning before they eventually found there footing, with a lot of those cards out right banned.

Magic was never intended to have the longevity it had - Richard Garfield pretty much thought it as a one-edition deal; originally he tried to pitch another tabletop game to Wizards of the Coast, but they rejected it because it would cost too much to produce. MtG was his cheaper proposal, and he thought it wouldn't sell too well.

There's some power creep in Magic but it's much less so than in Yu-Gi-Oh (in some ways, the power level has actually decreased over time). The format they try to push the most is Standard, which only includes the last two years of sets, and once a year will rotate the oldest year out. So you do have to still get the new sets to keep up, but it's able to incentivize a player without undergoing the extreme level of power creep you'll see in Yu-Gi-Oh.

And if you really don't want to keep up with Standard, there are nonrotating formats (i.e. sets are never removed) like Modern or Legacy. Their nonrotating nature makes them somewhat like Yu-Gi-Oh's main format never removing sets, but because Standard's rotation absolves them of the need to power creep just to sell sets, the nonrotating formats are much more stable in terms of power level and metagame.
