Lots of people are on youtube and never monetized. Including me. It's just a hobby.
Imagine I got paid $200 for every shitpost. Suddenly I start shitposting recommendations for current movies and products. Someone says "this guy is a shill" and the response is "y'all just be hating because he makes more money than you" or "like YOU'RE so morally pure, huh?!?"
It's like the world has gone mad and we can't even call out when someone's quality is suffering or they're blatantly shilling. I feel like basically all of mainstream media, including the internet, is comprised of paid shills now. I just want to enjoy talking about hobbies with people who also enjoy them and are not paid to talk about them.
I made a terrible L4D2 shitpost that got nearly 6 million views and I never monetized anything on my channel. Because it was just a hobby. I got views trickling down from that to my other terrible videos. I could've made money from it but then I would have felt an obligation to continue to put out videos and that's the quickest way to kill a hobby for me.
Matter of fact, I recorded gaming sessions with friends from a forum I visited around then. Had been on that forum for nearly 5 years and we were all relatively good buddies, all things considered. I quit making videos and quit playing the games those videos were made from because every time I booted it up, even to just casually play, I'd get a message from a bunch of them, "YOU RECORDING?!?!?!?!?!?!"
