But it was the first big Kickstarter scame that hurt everyone's feelz.

Inafune showed himself to be an idiot by starting at least two other Kickstarter projects before the first one even finished (probably wanted to get as much cash as possible before people realize what a hack he truly is), did some failed non-Kickstarter project where probably most of his Kickstarter money went, and he hired a PR manager who triggered the shit out of people by being some kind of tumblrina. Ever seen that art of a female Mighty holding a wrench? That was her idea.
And despite the MN9 Kickstarter making way more money than he supposedly needed, some key features used to advertize this shit (like being able to transform into basic enemies for puzzle solving purposes) was scrapped because they didn't have the "budget" for it (aka almost none of the cash actually went into hiring developers worth a damn).

Suffice to say the salt was very delicious.

You forgot that embarrassing trailer by Deep Silver where they practically mocked the game's entire fanbase (cause let's be honest here, Mega Man fans are almost entirely weebs themselves).

Mighty No. 9 simply suffered from having ridiculously high expectations from day one. The disappointment and outrage over the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 was still fresh in people's mind when the MN9 kickstarter happened and most fanboys only donated to the project based on their resentment towards Capcom than on the project's actual merit. They completely ignored the fact Inafune hasn't had an actual creative role in a Mega Man game since the SNES installments or the fact he wasn't even the true creator of the first NES game to begin with (he only designed a few bosses).

He was also inappropriately credited as the creator of Mega Man for years. It wasn't until Hideki Kamiya called Inafune a businessman did everyone realize they got conned.

Here's a pretty good run down for anyone that doesn't know.

I distinctly remember messaging a buddy on steam about him playing MN9 and asked him, "So is Capcom free of consequence for firing Inafune now?"

His response was a firm, "Yes. 100%. They were completely justified."

I never paid attention to the Mighty No 9 hate.

Is it actually a bad game, or were people just mad because it wasn't enough like Megaman?
It's mediocre

I'd say below that even. There are plenty of MM clones, especially ROM hacks, that are just as good or far better.
The level design in Mighty # Nein is flat, flat, flat, flat and even more flat with a pit thrown in somewhere.

And now with mega man maker out there's really no reason not to enjoy it.

Mighty No. 9 had terrible level design and it didn't help that you could simply dash over most of the levels

MGVB is more like what it should have been
