Do you mean Doki Doki Panic, or the real SMB2? Then again, finding the answer to this kinda is a metaphor for the meaning of life, isn't it?

Why not both?

Honestly, the real SMB2 was basically the '80s equivalent of DLC. Just rearranged levels that looked exactly like the previous game levels. They should have released the arcade game (where Mario and Luigi just bash koopas all day) as the sequel. Basically what Nintendo did with TMNT II: The Arcade Game.

All three were spendid entries in Super Mario All-Stars, by the way.

Considering it was made for the Famicom Disk system where you'd go grab it for pocket change at some kiosk, that's very accurate.
The bitchy whiners that constantly say they would've rather had the nip SMB2 forget that asking cartridge prices in Burgerland for that low-effort game would've been seen as Nintendo taking the piss. They just barely and with lots of marketing effort got people to buy a console again after the crash. They couldn't piss that away by charging fiddy bucks for what's basically an expansion.

At this point the US/European version of Super Mario Bros. 2 might as well be considered the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2. Various enemies that debuted in it have become staples in Mario games (e.g. Bob-Ombs, Shy Guys), and it--in and out of Japan--was the game remade into Super Mario Advance, a launch title for the Game Boy Advance.

Interestingly, Doki Doki Panic originally WAS going to be a Mario game, but they decided to make it its own thing instead in Japan. So switching it to a Mario game outside of Japan was really just reverting to the original plan.

SMB2 also fixed a lot of the shittier bits in Dinky Dinky Pinkdick like having to play as every character to see the ending. There were even some bug fixes. The makeover itself took more effort than the real SMB2.

And the Nintendo would go on to release more low effort garbage for $50 and soyboys would slurp it up like nigger jizz out of their gfs pussy.

Eyup, all because they laid the groundwork all the way back then, establishing themselves as a company with high quality standards that set them apart from the companies involved in the crash. Had they just released SMB2 as a cartridge in burgerland they would've been as irrelevant as they were in Europe.

Nowadays, all they need is one good game every two years or so to keep the illusion alive. Imagine where Spoony would be today if he'd release two or three good videos a year. He'd at least make Matthewmatosis numbers, who also only makes that many videos anybody gives a fuck about a year, if that.
That's basically Nintendo's spot right now.

I must say that I overall prefer the Japanese SMB2
