Phil kinda reminds me of that one kid we had in elementary school that was bullied by half the school. The teacher was pretty much unable to cope with the situation and eventually ignored it until it solved itself.

One day we where out in the backyard and there was like 20 kids gathered from different classes in a crowd staring at this one kid and one guy told me to throw that punch

It turns out the reason the kid constantly antagonized people is because he wanted friends and when he finally got some the bullying seized. I take it Phil didn't get enough attention as a child from his parents and is now compensating. Nobody would like so much negative attention and stay in that bubble for so long unless they are compensating for a lack of it and take anything they can get. It's almost on a pathological level. It wasn't so pronounced when he still had his friends around him that he later all threw under the bus for his MCMansion.
