He knows, he's just desperate for the "nice guy displaying openness as a man" schtick to work because he has nothing else and it's how he copes. He can't fight, looks and sounds like Smeagle, and has never had sex with any human much less a woman.

Suppose that kind of fits.. If we're generous. Gollum had a much more pleasant voice though. It was calmer and quieter even when agitated.
