We didn't have any border controls on the Danish borders since the 90s. Not because of some EU shit but simply because both nations agreed to just drop them. The EU is a massively bureaucratic shitshow, for sure, but the Ireland thing is complicated and a unique problem (at least in Europe) that you can't really blame them for. Because of The Troubles, there can't be a hard border there without tearing up the Good Friday Agreement which is a complicated thing that defused decades of terrorism and conflict. Unless someone comes up with a way that stops Catholic Republicans and Protestant Unionists from hating each other which isn't happening any time soon.

To give them an open border, we'd have to stay in the single market. Denmark is in the single market which is why there's no hard border there - we won't be doing that it seems so the Denmark idea won't work. You could separate Northern Ireland from the UK, which isn't acceptable to the Unionists (who currently prop up a minority UK government), or separate Northern Ireland from Ireland, which isn't acceptable to the Republicans (who have equal power in the NI government). The Ireland situation is basically a paradox and if you don't solve it both sides have nailbombs.

They're kept separate because a decent number of NI want to remain part of the UK, but a minority of NI citizens and a vast majority of Irish citizens want a united Ireland. Both sides see it as a zero sum game, hence all the bombings and shit. This is the only way Unionists get to say they're part of the UK while Republicans get what is in practical terms a united Ireland, with no border, no customs checks, or anything. They also get to choose UK or Irish citizenship too.

It's one of those things where the actual root of the problem is centuries old political and religious shit so it's pretty much impossible to get to the bottom of it.

Was that not because of the Schengen Agreement, which was originally separate from the EU but subsequently absorbed by it? Neither Ireland nor the UK are part of it but Ireland probably would have joined the Area except that doing so would have caused the sort of problems with the border which are now being caused by the pointlessness of Brexit.
