Vulcan, in Golden Axe 3, every character has a button combo interrupt move you can do. I've found it works a lot better than blocking. For the leopard dude, it's a flip kick. The flip kick has loads of priority and beats out most attacks straight. I don't know the input because I haven't played GA3 in a while, but blocking isn't something to you need to play the game.

GA3 works with the 6-button controller (even though the XYZ buttons are non-functional in the game), so you're probably thinking of 1 or 2.

I believe you can make your 6-button controller function like a 3-button controller if you hold down the MODE button while booting the Genesis.

I think that's why sega had the 6 button controller in the first place. Muh Street Fighter.

A lot of the late Genesis releases did support it like Streets of Rage 3, Beyond Oasis and Contra Hard Corps, so it got plenty of mileage. It was technically an option for all the games that supported it, but let's be honest here, you have to be insane to play Street Fighter II with the original 3-button pad and use Start to toggle between punches and kicks.
