The Bakshi LoTR is kinda terrible in places. Bakshi was so deep in the rotoscope camp he didnt' even trace over frames anymore and just put paint on the overexposed film. And the 'balrog', a creature described as a creatured bathed in shadow and flame, was just an actor wearing trashbags over his feet, a lion's head, and butterfly wings.

The only good thing to come from that movie was Peter Jackson borrowed the visuals of a few shots.

And that movie is only good in stills.

I've never seen the movie completely, but I find it very interesting as one of those "what could be". It's not particularly good, but I see it much closer to the books, at least in spirit, than Jackson's overblown bombastic-spastic creations. Yes, I do like the modern LOTR, but to me, it's just way too popcorn-like. The books are nothing like that, obviously, and infinitely better as far as I am concerned.

Also, those rotoscoped actors were obviously because of budget reasons, that movie looks unfinished in places, because they probably went over budget and couldn't go any further.
