Dan isn't awful, it's just boring. He makes videos on some really interesting topics, but just doesn't quite have the charisma to really pull it off. He also overuses the exact same phrases ("I'm getting ahead of myself", to name one), and is generally just boring rather than offensive to any degree. Discount Larry is a pretty good description; he's like Larry except lacking any of the sardonic behaviour which characterises his videos.

He's one step up above Gamester81, I'll admit that, who is so boring that he may well be the universal cure for insomnia, and like Dan only have any popularity because he covers interesting topics, not that he actually covers them in an interesting way. You can have a dry personality and still be an entertaining person (James Rolfe's more serious videos are a good indication of that), but the problem with Dan is that he's neither in the entertaining camp nor is he really in the informative camp; instead he occupies a bit of a grey-area where he's not unwatchable, but not entertaining enough to be worthwhile. He's background noise in human form, basically. Just like everyone else from Essex.

You could probably replace Dan with a text-to-speech device and get something with more charisma.

Just like with the actress in one of the movies RLM reviewed in the latest BotW, the actress was less charismatic and had less energy in her voice that a text to speech program.

Larry should really replace Dan with text to speech. It's cheaper in the long run, more people would see the adds on his videos and he get more patrons for Patreon bucks
