The lawsuit McDonald's faced wasn't simply because of someone spilling their coffee. McDonald's were sued and lost because they were knowingly serving coffee hot enough to cause third-degree burns, about 88 °C or 190 °F for you burgers, and the old woman that sued did get burnt that badly.

The price of the lawsuit was set so high to set an example as McDonalds had been sued multiple times before for similar reasons, but were all tiny fees, $1000 or less, they also did it to get press attention.

The thing with Murrican courts is that they like to scale their monetary punishments according to your income to ensure it'll always feel like a kick in the balls instead of a slap on the wrist.
