Actually, my theory is that PBG has the help of having been part of Normal Boots as well as those old, "Minecraft Hardcore," things he used to do. He'd invite a bunch of people on and they'd all play through until they won or all died and the guests he had would draw in quite a few people from different places.
At one point they even got contacted by Blizzard to do a Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls hardcore runthrough.
Probably still coasting on the influx of viewers from that.

Did people really care about Normal Boots? They're site died like twice already, and it's probably never coming back after they backstabbed Jon (aka the main reason most people ever visited their site in the first place).

People cared about JonTron. Whether they cared about the site or not if you were associated with Normal Boots you were thought to be associated with JonTron.
They would also do crossovers with each other (Apples and Grapes).
