Maybe the film is just shit? As far as I heard it's some pretentious 3edgy5me movie, so it's possible audience would reject it.

Looking a bit more into mother! and reviews on it, from what I can tell the reason a lot of people are so souring over it is the marketing. It pitches itself as some kind of mainstream horror film when it's really an arthouse film that just happens to have a few horror elements. So people think they're seeing a horror movie, then end up with something totally different, which naturally irritates them considerably. Most likely the studio did it that way because they figured "who cares if people are angry? They've already paid, so ha!"

Look at popular YT channels. I mean the really popular ones. The girls look good, the guys look good and come off as people a teenager would like to hang out with. Unless you do something extraordinary that is really interesting or entertaining to watch, people are going to care a lot about how you look and if they'd want something to do with you IRL.
It's just as baffling as high up execs not getting that kids don't want to watch kids but rather young adults that are allowed the things they want, like a pretty girlfriend/handsome boyfriend, their own place, being allowed to drink and a car.
