The "big twist" was that right after MJ and Peter made the deal (BOTH them had to willingly agree) Mephisto showed them their daughter that will now never be born which made them sad for a few seconds before they lost all memory of making the deal in the first place.

I love that comic book logic of, "we tied up a major plot point by letting these two get married and now that Peter doesn't have to keep chasing MJ part of the appeal of the story is lost. Let's just completely reverse it!"

I don't know why people read Spiderman but I'm pretty sure it's not for the relationship drama.
