As usual, when it comes to these IN, it's difficult to find out anything that would mention if he has a separate business - I doubt he's employed full time and on top of that does all the other stuff, unless he literally just appears in these videos and all the editing is done by his disgusting friends from the Video Rental series. But I can imagine him doing jewtube half the time and regular job the other half.

He remains successful because you can tell he doesn't take the whole Youtube thing dead seriously like the other INs do, and people gravitate towards sincerity. There's never been a "WTF Youtube?" type video, he never talks about how many views he has or made a Patreon to fund his YT career. In short, James doesn't really have an ego. Unlike Angry Joe, his "mission statement" of protecting people from bad games is just a joke. Dude only does AVGN because it supports the family and lets him work on pet projects like Board James and Monster Madness. If it stopped being profitable, he'd just quietly move on to something else.
