For a decade we've had the tug of war with capeshit, DC went edgy because Nolan's Batmen went over well w people (although Rises isn't super edgy, that movie's campier than it gets credit for - even if that isn't on purpose

Now Sonic could've gone in the same direction. It has lore that most of these same manchildren know. Instead it is actually explicitly catering to kids. It's not for edgelords, its not there to stroke the egos of the 30 somethings trying to convince themselves they're not geezers, they are just movies for children. "No, we're not going to have Maria dying of an uncurable illness, and have her get shot in the back in cold blood." I personally think that's overly cautious, a kid can have a little smidge of grit so long as its coherent for the story, and generates empathy for the character they like (in this case Keanu the Edgehog), but there's a compelling argument that the choice to change that backstory demonstrates a good understanding of Sanic 3's audience. We hit the same beats without Paramount getting calls from angry parents.
Sanic doesn't care that Blob wants to feel like he's watching something intellectual, and he knows that, and he's furious about it.
