They seem to lack a basic understanding of the mechanics of cities. Cities are sustained by the miles and miles of rural country surrounding them, which is where a lot of food is grown. Cities cannot exist without that support network. If they do not have it, they must integrate a support network from the global economy, which will go bust the moment there's a hitch in said global economy.

This has been the case throughout history. Cities are like an emergent property of a prosperous rural area where populations continue to grow, supported by the rural countryside's fertile crops.

Many cities today would not exist, except that we have laid miles of piping to divert water so that crops could be grown in areas they ordinarily would not be.
