I've played the games and read a few of the books, and I find this hilarious.

In Strange Journey you're practically Doomguy, thrown into a wormhole with a military crew to kill demons.

It gets kinda muddled after a while though. Devil Survivor is an SMT mainline game, but started development as a Persona title. I think Persona 5 brings back contracts and demon negotiations into the mix. The big thing is usually Persona being about teen angst and figuring out Who Did The Bad Thing....

Also, if you're into reading manga, the The Origin manga retelling of the original series is really good. I pirated that, enjoyed it, and then bought the hardcover releases for it.

Not a big fan of the related anime that's just "Look at how cool Char is as a kid!"
